Aeromexico, Mexico’s flagship carrier, started flying this week between the Distrito Federal in the Aztec capital and the city of Santa Clara in central Cuba, the gateway to the keys off Villa Clara’s north shore which are increasingly becoming one of the most sought-after travel destination.

Aeromexico will operate weekly flights to the Abel Santamaria Airport, a terminal that welcomed over 167,000 passengers in the first half of the ongoing year, mostly hailing from Canada, Argentina, France and the UK.

According to figures provided by the National Statistics Office, Cuba received 947,891 tourists in the first six months of 2013. Nearly half of those tourist arrivals came from Canada (49 percent). As many as 8,176 Mexicans visited the island nation.
